(Credit: Gage Skidmore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gageskidmore\/54106012571\">Flickr<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Women\u2019s overall influence in American politics is on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking strictly in numbers, an <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2025\/08\/elect-democratic-women-2026-strategy\/\">ever-increasing amount<\/a> of women are <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/this-single-mom-is-squeezed-by-las-cost-of-living-now-shes-running-for-mayor\/\">running for office<\/a> at local, state and federal levels. And more of them are currently holding positions, too. As of this year, women make up 28% of Congress, and just over 30% of state executive and legislative offices, <a href=\"https:\/\/cawp.rutgers.edu\/data#:~:text=The%20CAWP%20Women%20Elected%20Officials%20Database%20contains,**Mayors%20over%2030k**%2025.4%25%20of%201%2C686%20seats\">according to<\/a> the Center for American Women in Politics. Women additionally continue to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/as-hollywood-strikes-lets-remember-7-real-life-norma-raes\/\">leaders of political movements<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But beyond the wins in representation, it\u2019s worth examining <em>how<\/em> these women utilize their power. (Credit: Wikimedia Commons)<\/p>\n                      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"col-md-6 text\">\n          <h2>Kristi Noem<\/h2>\n          <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Homeland Security Secretary, Noem had been tasked with overseeing ICE activity directly \u2013 and used her position to defend the actions of its agents, at times even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/following-ice-shooting-of-civilian-women-leaders-express-outrage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negating videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have shown ICE agents harming and killing civilians in her accounts. Her handling of the situation was much critiqued \u2013 and even resulted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ms.now\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/calls-for-noems-impeachment-grow-as-dhs-spending-bill-faces-new-resistance?cid=sm_fb_maddow&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawPkdHlleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETFkbENWTGhhSUpKakJPeGZCc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHifx3tPhHRTBMspeS94aLAv8omuF1awi1RKrPnSbX5IDdGJ4N9javyMkIjh__aem_qMq1PUDbkzFvBY4_kvVpFA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calling for her impeachment among other elected officials, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/today-explained-newsletter\/476884\/kristi-noem-dhs-minneapolis-impeachment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a number of Republican lawmakers. Hinojosa, a Democrat, is vying to become the next governor of Texas, a traditionally-Republican border state. There is cause for speculation about a slowly turning tide in the Lone Star State, in light of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/texas-democrat-taylor-rehmet-flips-republican-state-senate-seat-trump-won-by-17-points\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent win<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a Democratic state senate candidate in a solidly \u201cred\u201d district. But beyond leftward shifts in local politics, Hinojosa also brings years of Texas politics experience to the table. In the middle of a recent town hall address, a man approached her, then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/ilhan-omar-donald-trump-rhetoric-town-hall-attack-minneapolis-rcna256422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sprayed her<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with an unidentified substance \u2013 an escalation of animosity against her that has been sparked by Trump himself, she says. Tim Walz\u2019s announcement that he won\u2019t be seeking re-election. Klobuchar, now in her fourth Senate term, became a national figure when she ran for president in 2020. Since his death, Erika Kirk has become the CEO of Turning Point USA, the large, well-funded and far-reaching conservative youth organization her husband founded.
