And now, its cinematographer has made history on her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the movie&#8217;s unprecedented 16 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Autumn Durald Arkapaw had made history in January as the first <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/suspending-monthly-economic-reports-would-be-really-bad-for-women-of-color\/\">woman of color<\/a> to ever be nominated in the category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the 2026 Academy Awards, Arkapaw became the first woman to ever win the prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only three other women have ever been nominated for the award \u2013 Rachel Morrison for war drama \u201cMudbound\u201d in 2018; Ari Wegner for Western romance \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d in 2021; and Mandy Walker for dazzling biopic \u201cElvis\u201d in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arkapaw, who is Filipina and Creole, was up against an all-male roster of fellow nominees for this year\u2019s Oscar. Carter, the costume designer who has now become the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/awards\/ruth-e-carter-most-nominated-black-woman-oscars-history-1236632808\/\">most nominated Black woman<\/a> in Oscars history. Though she didn&#8217;t win this year, this was her fifth nomination, following nods for work on both \u201cBlack Panther\u201d films, as well as 1992 biographical drama \u201cMalcolm X\u201d and 1997 historical drama \u201cAmistad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Oscars, &#8220;Sinners&#8221; ultimately took home four statues, the other three going to Coogler for Best Original Screenplay, star Michael B. Jordan for Best Lead Actor, and Best Original Score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to \u201cSinners,\u201d Arkapaw worked on 2022 Marvel smash-hit sequel \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever\u201d \u2013 also directed by Coogler \u2013 2024 drama \u201cThe Last Showgirl\u201d and 2021 superhero TV series \u201cLoki,\u201d among numerous other film, TV and music credits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/vogue.ph\/lifestyle\/culture\/cinematographer-autumn-durald-arkapaw-profile\/\">2025 interview<\/a> with Vogue, she recalled the dearth of role models she had to look up to when she was younger. \u201cI started looking up who shot the films that I appreciated and I didn\u2019t find a woman cinematographer,\u201d she recalled.
