As the expression goes, the conservatives in charge are \u201csaying the quiet part loud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, the official X account for the Department of Homeland Security posted a call to followers<\/a> to \u201cremember your homeland\u2019s heritage.\u201d Accompanying this brief missive is a 5-year-old painting by conservative artist Morgan Weistling<\/a> entitled \u201cA Prayer for a New Life\u201d (which the DHS mistitled as \u201cNew Life in a New Land,\u201d and used without Weistling\u2019s consent<\/a>). His work features a small Westward-Expansion-era white family, a mother cradling a newborn child at its heart, all huddled together peacefully in the back of a Conestoga wagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s no reference in the painting or the post, of course, to the fact that Westward expansion \u2013 often called “Manifest Destiny,” which is even depicted as a classically beautiful, angelic white woman in other paintings \u2013 led to the displacement and suffering of Native Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DHS\u2019s post, in fact, makes Weistling\u2019s painting eerily evocative of another work: \u201cThe Aryan Family<\/a>\u201d (circa 1938) by Wolfgang Willrich, whose specialty was Nazi propaganda. Willrich\u2019s print also features a white family as the supposed ideal, complete with a blond mother breastfeeding her blond infant. And like the DHS post, those responsible for disseminating the Nazi message also emphasized the importance of \u201cheritage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
