(Credit: Anna Shvets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/serious-colleagues-working-with-laptops-in-office-5324859\/\">pexels.com<\/a>) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Women are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/will-voters-favor-women-who-fight-sexual-harassment-congressional-candidates-in-michigan-will-find-out\/\">sexual harassment<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/stacie-sussman-left-corporate-america-boys-club-find-meaning-work\/\">corporate America<\/a> as much as they did five years ago, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-static.leanin.org\/women-in-the-workplace\/2024-pdf\">new report<\/a> reveals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinsey &amp; Company and LeanIn.Org released their joint Women in the Workplace report this week \u2014 the largest study analyzing the state of women working in corporate roles, they say \u2014 which examined a decade\u2019s worth of data collected from 480,000 participants across the U.S. about their <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/world-economic-forum-report-grim-global-gender-gap\/\">workplace<\/a> experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While women are increasingly landing high-ranking executive roles, jumping from occupying 11% of them in 2020 to 20% in 2024, women\u2019s comfort in the workplace has not improved in tandem. Sexual harassment remains a prevalent issue, with nearly four in 10 women reporting some form of it in their office cultures. This remains basically the same as it was five years ago, when McKinsey last researched the matter \u2014 in fact, it\u2019s gotten worse. For example, singer Cassie filed a lawsuit against former manager (and ex-boyfriend) Sean \u201cDiddy Combs \u2013 who was, by the way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/entertainment\/live-news\/sean-diddy-combs-arrested-nyc-09-17-2024\/index.html\">arrested<\/a> in New York City this week on charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Former NYP cop Roxanne Ludemann, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/21\/nyregion\/timothy-pearson-sexual-harassment-lawsuit.html\">filed her own suit<\/a> earlier this year against Timothy Pearson, Mayor Eric Adam\u2019s senior advisor, alleging repeated occurrences of harassment in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even as women battle for better treatment, there is room for improvements in other areas of their professional lives, too. To be sure, some things have improved \u2013 employers offer more work-life benefits for women, for example, with a record 92% of companies surveyed now offering paid maternal leave to employees. Still, disparities in pay remain a pain point. Researchers assert that it will take 22 years for white women \u2014 and twice as long for Black women \u2014 to reach pay <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/michelle-obama-we-can-make-our-own-stand-toward-pay-parity\/\">parity<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microaggressions, defined as everyday forms of disrespect, also plague workplaces for women of color and LGBTQ women, which one Black manager cited in the report calls, \u201ca heavy burden.\u201d The respondent, also unnamed, continued: \u201cIf you\u2019re too strong, you\u2019re an angry Black woman. \u201cIf you\u2019re too soft, you can\u2019t handle the role, or you\u2019re unqualified.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address these myriad challenges, researchers suggest that companies invest more effort into encouraging women leaders, reconstructing their workplace practices, and engaging male employees in implementing strategies that help their female colleagues advance.
