(Credit: Danna Harman)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s Note: This is part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/afghan-women-we-are-not-fragile\/\">Afghan Women<\/a> project, marking two years since the Taliban takeover.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Danna Harman got a dream assignment from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/30\/world\/asia\/afghan-girls-robotics-team-fatemah-qaderyan.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>: to go to Afghanistan and report on an all-girls robotics team. She got to know the group of girls well as she traveled with them to competitions in Mexico, Europe and all around the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cut to four years later \u2013 Harman was on holiday in Venice and started receiving messages from some of the women, whom she\u2019d kept in touch with periodically over the years. \u201cCan you help me in any way?\u201d they asked her, as news spread of the Taliban\u2019s takeover of Kabul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t really have any tools to help,\u201d said Harman, who splits her time between London, Israel and New York. \u201cWhat happens is you ask all your contacts.\u201d She made cold calls to everyone she knew \u2013 other journalists, military service people, etc. \u2013 and gradually got more people to help Afghans get passports, visas and permission letters to leave the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She enlisted some of her girlfriends in Israel \u2013 \u201cwho have literally nothing to do with Afghanistan\u201d \u2013 to help, as well as a lawyer friend in Canada, who then brought another lawyer friend. \u201cWe really were the blind leading the blind,\u201d Harman said. \u201cWe&#8217;re all WhatsApping around the clock with a growing group and subgroups. The members of our team were around the globe. You would wake up after sleeping for four hours and you have \u2013 I&#8217;m not kidding \u2013 600 messages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point, they were able to get Yotam Polizer, the CEO of an NGO called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.israaid.org\/\">IsraAID<\/a>, on board. It was through IsraAID that the group was able to get Afghans on buses to safety. Harman spent a lot of time with the group, taking them on camping trips and having dance parties and movie nights. The women would even sit on the floor together to eat every night. \u201cI felt very much at home,\u201d Harman said.
