Prior to her 2021 appointment to the office of U.S. Secretary of the Interior, she became the first Native American woman to lead a state party in 2014 when she became New Mexico\u2019s Lieutenant Governor. As Secretary of the Interior, Haaland was focused on preserving the nation\u2019s natural resources and cultural heritage. That\u2019s not all \u2013 she\u2019s also the first Black and first South-Asian Vice President in American history. And she was, of course, the first woman of color to secure the Democratic nomination for President in 2024. But I hope that you\u2019ve seen that with hard work, determination and love, it can be done.\u201d &#8211; Ketanji Brown Jackson <\/h2>\n          <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ketanji Brown Jackson\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/scotus-nominee-ketanji-brown-jackson-pays-tribute-judicial-legend-constance-baker-motley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nomination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Supreme Court was an historic one \u2014 she is now the first Black woman to serve in the highest court in the country. She was nominated by the Biden administration and confirmed in 2022. We are so smug about our superiority, we fail to see our own glaring faults, such as prejudice and poverty amidst affluence.\u201d &#8211; Patsy Mink<\/h2>\n          <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patsy Mink was the first woman of color elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and the first Asian-American woman to serve in the U.S. Congress. As a Hawaii native, Mink jumped at the opportunity to serve when Hawaii officially became a state in 1959. She earned a seat in the Hawaii State Senate in 1962 before winning a new position in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1964. Mink was a strong supporter of gender and racial equality, and an especially strong voice behind landmark legislation such as Title IX. She became the first Latina woman to win an Academy Award for her portrayal of Anita in the 1961 film \u201cWest Side Story.\u201d Moreno is also an EGOT winner \u2014 meaning that she has won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards \u2014 and earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George Bush in 2004. Roosevelt. She was said to be the \u201cdriving force\u201d behind the New Deal. In interviews, Perkins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/francesperkinscenter.org\/life-new\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resisting her family\u2019s encouragement to take a teaching position, as many women in New England did at the time. She even became the first woman to take a team to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/nfl-coach-katie-sowers-shatters-several-glass-ceilings-at-super-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Bowl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in February 2020. Sowers had always loved football, but had never seen a woman coach in the NFL before landing a role herself.
