To quote Issa Rae, who presented the \u201cBest Director\u201d Oscar<\/a> nominations in 2020<\/a>, \u201cCongratulations to those men.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nominations for the 95th annual Academy Awards have once again failed to include any female directors<\/a> in the \u201cBest Director\u201d category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nominations, released on Jan. 24, include: Todd Field (T\u00e1r<\/em><\/a>), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><\/a>), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em><\/a>), Ruben \u00d6stlund (Triangle of Sadness<\/em><\/a>) and Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes as a disappointment to those in the industry who had high hopes for female directors to be recognized by the Academy, especially after the back-to-back wins of directors Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog<\/em><\/a>) in 2022 and Chlo\u00e9 Zhao (Nomadland<\/em><\/a>) in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These victories fueled the buzz surrounding the 2023 awards season, with plenty of female directors\u2019 names in the mix for potential nominations. Some of the top contenders were: Chinonye Chukwu (Till<\/em><\/a>), Sarah Polley (Women Talking<\/em><\/a>), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King<\/em><\/a>), Maria Schrader (She Said<\/em><\/a>), and Charlotte Wells (Aftersun<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce again, Academy voters have shown that they don\u2019t value women\u2019s voices,\u201d LA-based advocacy group Women In Film said<\/a> in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

Despite Polley being snubbed as a director, her film Women Talking<\/em> \u2014 which did receive a Critics Choice nomination \u2014 was nominated by the Academy for \u201cBest Picture\u201d and \u201cBest Adapted Screenplay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prince-Blythewood\u2019s film The Woman King <\/em>was also recognized as a nominee by the Critics Choice Awards, as well as the BAFTAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, this year\u2019s cast of director nominations might be a reflection of a troubling trend in Hollywood. A recent study<\/a> from the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealed the percentage of women and people of color directing the biggest titles at the U.S. box office floundered in 2022, despite reaching a record high in previous years. This suggests the surge of advocacy for representation in Hollywood \u2014 including the back-to-back female \u201cBest Director\u201d wins \u2014 may have been a  performative response to movements such as Oscars So White<\/a>, Me Too<\/a>  and Black Lives Matter<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn\u2019t help that the victories of Campion and Zhao were preceded<\/a> by just one other female win, with Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first female winner ever for The Hurt Locker<\/em><\/a> in 2009. In the almost 100-year history of the Oscars, only 7 women have ever been nominated in the directors category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many have argued that the lack of female nominees perpetuates the unequal distribution of power in Hollywood when it comes to funding and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn Academy Award is more than a gold statue, it\u2019s a career accelerator that can lead to continued work and increased compensation,\u201d said Women in Film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 95th Oscars ceremony will air live on ABC on March 12 from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n
