(Credit: Ole Spata)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/about-us\/\">The Story Exchange<\/a> today announced the winner of its second annual Women In Science Incentive Prize \u2014 a grant program that recognizes innovative female scientists working on solutions to the most pressing environmental issues of our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the focus is on women leading efforts to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/women-in-science-incentive-prize-2022\/\">air quality<\/a>. &#8220;As climate change makes our air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/climateandhealth\/pubs\/air-quality-final_508.pdf\">less healthy<\/a> to breathe, we want to support women who are responding with urgency to protect individuals and vulnerable communities from dangerous exposures,&#8221; said Victoria Wang, co-founder of The Story Exchange. &#8220;Our five winners impressed us with their experience, sharply honed skills and commitment to environmental justice.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five winners were selected after a two-pronged application process, and following a rigorous scientific review by judges from several universities as well as an assessment by The Story Exchange editors. To be eligible, applicants needed to have advanced degrees in engineering, environmental science or closely related fields, and be working in the field of air as researchers or entrepreneurs. Each will receive a $5,000 grant to continue her work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2019\/06\/12\/plastic-youre-eating-credit-cards-worth-plastic-each-week\/1437150001\/\">indicates<\/a> that we now inhale and ingest a credit card&#8217;s worth of plastic each week,&#8221; said Sue Williams, co-founder of The Story Exchange. &#8220;While the world is slowly waking up to the ravages of climate change, these women pioneers are in the lab fighting to protect us all.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a media organization, The Story Exchange aims to elevate women&#8217;s voices. It began The Women In Science Incentive Award in 2021 to specifically recognize the work of female scientists, who often face discrimination and feel isolated in their work. Last year&#8217;s prizes went to women working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/announcing-winners-women-in-science-incentive-prize\/\">water crisis<\/a>. Next year\u2019s theme will be announced in June.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the recipients of this year\u2019s grants, in alphabetical order.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_29ccce172add7b80ffdaa8458eeeed81\" class=\"wp-block listicle alignwide\">\n            <div class=\"row\">\n                  <div class=\"col-md-6 photo\">\n            <div class=\"number\">1<\/div>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Madeline_Clough-1-525x394.jpg\"\/>\n                          <p class=\"caption\">Over the course of five years, Madeline Clough plants to collect air particulates \u2013 or tiny particles \u2013\u00a0 in custom-built samplers, in partnership with high schools in Michigan. <\/p>\n                      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"col-md-6 text\">\n          <h2>Madeline Clough <\/h2>\n          <p>When Madeline Clough collected her undergraduate degree last year from Central Michigan University, May temperatures were unusually high. For the past several years, she\u2019d been studying synthetic chemistry with the intention of pursuing a career in drug development. But that all changed during that graduation day of blistering heat. \u201cI\u2019ve always been drawn to the puzzle, the intrigue, of chemistry,\u201d Clough says. \u201cGrowing up, I knew that I wanted to use this interest in some capacity to better human health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/madeline-clough-sleuthing-microplastics-michigan\">READ MORE<\/a><\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n            <div class=\"row\">\n                  <div class=\"col-md-6 photo\">\n            <div class=\"number\">2<\/div>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/ivey-headshot-525x700.jpg\"\/>\n                          <p class=\"caption\">Cesunica Ivey, of the Air Quality Modeling and Exposure Lab at the University of California at Berkeley, hopes her work could influence state policies related to air pollution. <\/p>\n                      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"col-md-6 text\">\n          <h2>Cesunica Ivey<\/h2>\n          <p>In high school in Atlanta, Cesunica Ivey was a devoted member of Earth Tomorrow \u2014 a club that collected recyclable items and took part in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/hilary-franz-commissioner-public-lands-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conservation<\/a>\u00a0activities. \u201cWe were kind of not the cool kids,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cBut I was always inclined to do\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/women4climate-tech-challenge-names-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental advocacy<\/a> work.\u201d\u00a0 Today, Ivey has taken that early passion, combined it with computational skills developed at Georgia Institute of Technology, and turned it into highly regarded work on \u201cwearables\u201d \u2014 that is, fast-response monitors that allow even small households to measure exposure to dangerous air pollutants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/cesunica-ivey-supercomputers-wearables-air-pollution\/\">READ MORE<\/a><\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n            <div class=\"row\">\n                  <div class=\"col-md-6 photo\">\n            <div class=\"number\">3<\/div>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/KerryField2022b-525x275.jpeg\"\/>\n                          <p class=\"caption\">In Utah, Kerry Kelly, a professor of chemical engineering, is developing low-cost tools that measure pollution exposure. <\/p>\n                      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"col-md-6 text\">\n          <h2>Kerry Kelly<\/h2>\n          <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a recent evening in northern Utah, engineer Kerry Kelly was driving to an event when a dust cloud swept across the highway, obscuring her view.\u00a0\u201cThis is a road with a 50-mile-per-hour speed limit and visibility dropped to zero,\u201d she says. \u201cThere was no forecast that was going to happen, no warning.\u201d Fortunately, she avoided an accident, but others have not been so lucky. She\u2019d come home from school, wash her face, and watch the water run down the sink, brown and full of the soot that clustered in the air. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those places where the roadside signs that used to have advertisements now just show what the air pollution concentrations are for the day,&#8221; she says. &#8220;So it was never something that I could just
