Our planet is in trouble \u2013 but women could save us all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s what the International Center for Research on Women, a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit, was betting on when it pulled together<\/a> two other global organizations to prove the \u201ceffectiveness of women-led, managed and women-centered climate action,\u201d according to a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining the ICRW in this international research effort \u2013 launched in answer to the Clinton\u2019 Global Initiative\u2019s call for commitments to action<\/a> on crafting solutions to the world\u2019s problems \u2013 will be the Self-Employed Women\u2019s Association, a trade union for impoverished women throughout the world, and clean energy investment firm Solar Sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its purpose is simple: to create a data portfolio for use by policy-makers around the world that details the impacts of women-led, or women-centered, climate-change actions \u2013 and to chronicle how those efforts can simultaneously promote women\u2019s economic empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n

To start, study coordinators will look at work being performed by SEWA in Gujarat, India, and Solar Sister\u2019s efforts in East Africa. But any work studied by the team will have women front-and-center, will positively impact women economically, and will reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solar Sister executive director Katherine Lucey notes that women are on \u201cthe front lines of creating a more just, equitable, and sustainable future for us all.\u201d She adds, as an example, that \u201cSolar Sister entrepreneurs are amazing women who are tackling the climate crisis head on by bringing clean energy to their rural communities \u2026 [and] ensuring everyone, everywhere, has access to clean energy and economic opportunity needed to thrive with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It couldn\u2019t be more pressing. We are already seeing manifestations of climate change in the form of<\/a> erratic weather patterns, temperature increases, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. Indeed, \u201cthe effects of climate change are compounding daily \u2013 as witnessed by the flooding in Pakistan, increased fire risk across North America, and food scarcity worldwide,\u201d Peggy Clark, CEO and president of the ICRW, noted in the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And without intervention, experts warn, matters will only worsen. That\u2019s why \u201cevery single one of us must take action to address the climate crisis,\u201d Clark added. And \u201cwomen are at the center of progress on every major issue of our time: health equity, sustainable food systems, economic recovery \u2013 and climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
