(Credit: Flickr.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These women don&#8217;t need to pull any punches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The slap at Sunday night&#8217;s <meta charset=\"utf-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/new-diversity-standards-academy-awards-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academy<\/a> Awards that set the internet abuzz shouldn\u2019t overshadow the <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/fans-foundations-push-gender-equality-music-festivals\/\">deserving<\/a> women who took home awards. So we decided instead to focus on their triumphant wins, history-making moments and tender gestures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are a few instances that deserve celebration of women who wowed us and warmed our hearts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ariana-debose-gave-a-rousing-speech-after-becoming-the-first-openly-queer-woman-of-color-to-win-best-supporting-actress\">Ariana <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/3\/28\/22999362\/oscars-2022-history-firsts-trivia-ariana-debose-troy-kotsur-coda-apple-tv-plus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DeBose<\/a> gave a rousing speech after becoming the first openly queer woman of color to win Best Supporting Actress.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DeBose added a gold statue to her BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild awards for her stunning performance in \u201cWest Side Story\u201d as Anita.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Afro-Latina actress had already made history as the first openly queer woman of color to be nominated for the award. Winning it, she acknowledged in her acceptance speech, was a sign of change in the industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo anybody who has ever questioned your identity or you find yourself living in the gray spaces,\u201d she said, \u201cI promise you this \u2014 there is indeed a place for us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/27\/1088946140\/oscars-2022-jane-campion-best-director-power-of-the-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campion<\/a> was just the third woman to take home the Best Director award.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Power of the Dog,\u201d expected to sweep the awards last night, ended up with only one Oscar to its name \u2014 but it was a notable one. She appeared on stage in a wheelchair to announce the winner of Best Picture and occasionally seemed disoriented, but Lady Gaga had her back the whole time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaga, who has a slew of awards, made sure to keep the spotlight on Minnelli, stepping to the side as the crowd erupted into applause. But \u201cCODA\u201d also made history as a female-directed film about Deaf culture that spotlights Deaf actors and actresses, and it won the most high-profile award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writer and director Sian Heder described \u201cCODA,\u201d which stands for Child of Deaf Adults, as \u201ca story about the end of childhood,\u201d in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/27\/1088526640\/oscar-best-picture-coda-wins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A win for the <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/wireStory\/shaq-curry-win-oscars-queen-basketball-documentary-83707601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">documentary<\/a> \u201cThe Queen of Basketball\u201d proved the value of sharing female athletes\u2019 stories.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Short Subject Documentary award went to a New York Times film about legendary female athlete Lusia Harris, produced by basketball stars Shaquille O\u2019Neal and Stephen Curry. Harris, a basketball trailblazer who was the first Olympic woman to score a basket in womens\u2019 basketball history, died earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The victory honored Harris, director Ben Proudfoot noted, as proof that \u201cthere\u2019s an audience for female athletes.\u201d Hoisting the golden statue high, Proudfoot offered it as an answer to anyone who questioned \u201cwhether their stories are valuable or entertaining or important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proudfoot ended his acceptance speech with a call on President Biden to bring basketball player Brittney Griner, currently detained in Russia, back home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three hilarious female <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2022\/03\/best-jokes-funny-moments-2022-oscars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hosts<\/a> injected humor into a turbulent show at all the right times.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall helped to lighten the mood a bit, which turned out to be necessary..
