\u201cYou can\u2019t stand against hate<\/a> and oppression and fund hate and oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabrielle Union, while promoting a new Disney film, recently had those words to offer \u2013 among others \u2013 when asked<\/a> about the production company\u2019s initial silence regarding Florida\u2019s controversial \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill, and its earlier fiscal support of some of its authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those unfamiliar with it, the bill<\/a> seeks to eradicate any discussion of issues pertaining to sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms throughout the Sunshine State. The state legislature passed the measure on March 8, and awaits a signature from Gov. Ron DeSantis \u2013 who has already voiced his support<\/a> for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the lead-up to its passage, there was a public call for Disney executives to denounce the measure, in hopes that the company\u2019s significant business presence in the state would influence the decision. But Disney CEO Bob Chapek initially declined comment \u2013 angering both employees and the broader public in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n

After the initial backlash, Chapek later released a statement<\/a> to Disney employees, noting that \u201cthis is not just an issue about a bill in Florida, but instead yet another challenge to basic human rights,\u201d and apologizing for not being \u201ca stronger ally in the fight for equal rights.\u201d He also announced a \u201cpause\u201d to all political donations while the company reassesses its giving structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of her \u201cCheaper by the Dozen\u201d remake \u2013 which was produced by Walt Disney Pictures \u2013 Union stated that more, still, is needed. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to take a stand and be all about diversity and inclusion \u2026 you need to actually put your money where your mouth is,\u201d she said, adding that we, collectively, should \u201clook who\u2019s donating to what and \u2026 call people out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actress and producer has been a long-time, vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community, speaking out<\/a> on the need for inclusion and raising money<\/a> for organizations that foster and support equity. She is also the step-mother of a trans daughter, Zara, whom she speaks of proudly, and often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, as she pointed out, \u201cI\u2019ve been a Black woman in America since \u201972,\u201d so while she wasn\u2019t surprised by Disney\u2019s initial inaction, she recalls being gripped with fear over the matter all the same, \u201cbecause I know what this leads to.\u201d
Which is likely why she sought to impress the severity of the situation \u2013 both regarding this bill, and others like it<\/a> that have been proposed throughout the nation \u2013 upon listeners. \u201cEvery moment in history, there has been this moment,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know how this ends. We know where hate and oppression lead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
