[Credit: Fatima Babakura]\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Fatima-Babakura-Timabee-Eid-Ramadan-2021-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Fatima-Babakura-Timabee-Eid-Ramadan-2021-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>\n          <\/a>\n        <\/div>\n            <div class=\"entry-text\">\n          <h3 class=\"post-title\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/muslim-women-owned-businesses-see-strong-sales-ramadan-eid\/\">\n              During Ramadan and Eid, These Muslim Women Entrepreneurs Are Offering Faith and Fashion\n            <\/a>\n          <\/h3>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<p>The women who learn how to sew and design clothes at Custom Collaborative, which operates out of two small, windowless spaces in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, will be able to see all their hard work come to life \u2014 and light \u2014 in the fashion capital of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really excited,\u201d Okaro said in an interview from one of the classrooms, where she was planning a staff retreat. \u201cThat will bring great visibility to our work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there\u2019s much more to look forward to for an organization that started as a kernel of an idea almost 7 years ago, when Ngozi was running philanthropic efforts at Yale University \u2014 Custom Collaborative has also received $300,000 from Chanel to hold an apprenticeship program. The partnership had been in the works since June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/app\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Ngozi-Okaro2-525x787.jpg\" alt=\"Ngozi Okaro wears a statement belt made by one of the students at Custom Collaborative (Credit: Carolina Salazar)\" class=\"wp-image-56188\" width=\"394\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Ngozi-Okaro2-525x787.jpg 525w, https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Ngozi-Okaro2-150x225.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Ngozi-Okaro2-40x60.jpg 40w, https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Ngozi-Okaro2.jpg 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><figcaption>Ngozi Okaro wears a statement belt made by one of the students at Custom Collaborative (Credit: Carolina Salazar)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will do a formal launch of our apprenticeship program [with fashion brand Mara Hoffman],\u201d said Okaro, who has a law degree from Georgetown University. \u201cWe\u2019ve been able to grow and expand even during Covid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of Custom Collaborative is its 14-week, 30-hour-a-week training program where about a dozen women from all over the world in each cohort learn business strategies in order to put their new skills to use after they graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women are tasked with making an original piece of clothing or an accessory using donated, upcycled materials for a classmate, which is where their creative talents shine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okaro spoke glowingly of a corset-style leather belt with carefully placed grommets that lend it an industrial-chic edge, a wedding dress with appliqu\u00e9d lace, and a jumpsuit with bell sleeves and a funky pattern \u2014 all made by students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some women don\u2019t even know how to sew before they come to the program, Okaro said. \u201cA lot of people come to us thinking that if you work in fashion, you\u2019re either a seamstress or a designer or a model,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can be a technical designer or a pattern maker. You can be different things that they weren\u2019t necessarily aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six cohorts of women who represent 23 countries have passed through since the organization launched in 2016. The training institute will go back to in-person classes starting January 2022. Aside from the technical skills, the women also receive business mentorship and they have to write formal proposals in order to graduate. They also learn about personal finance and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okaro is even planning to address vaccine hesitancy among the women by inviting a public health specialist from New Jersey to speak with them about the importance of getting vaccines against Covid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just want to meet people where they are and support them in the way they need,\u201d Okaro said. \u201cThere are so many places where, as a society, we\u2019ve failed and left people behind, and it doesn\u2019t make sense to overlook talent.
