In the summer of 2019, she went to a protest for <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/meet-abortion-clinic-owner-texas\/\">reproductive rights<\/a> in Orlando, Florida &#8212; and she was taken with the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd. She felt that the <a href=\"https:\/\/thestoryexchange.org\/women-entrepreneurs-climate-change\/\">climate movement<\/a> was gaining steam, and she says at that moment she knew she had to start fighting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I just became really tired of just watching. I really just wanted to do something,\u201d Nanavati&nbsp; says. \u201cSo one day I just got on my computer and I emailed hundreds and hundreds of organizations all over. I was like: I want to be a part of this movement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She became involved in climate organizing with a group called Earth Uprising, but now works as a student volunteer with an advocacy organization called <a href=\"https:\/\/acespace.org\/2021\/06\/11\/ace-interview-anisa-nanavati-climate-conversations\/\">Action for the Climate Emergency<\/a>. As part of her outreach efforts, Nanavati actively works to combat climate denial and shares advice on <a href=\"https:\/\/acespace.org\/2021\/06\/11\/ace-interview-anisa-nanavati-climate-conversations\/\">how to talk with skeptical family members<\/a> in a non-hostile way about the real facts of climate change. In the wake of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, young activists are digging in for a fight at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young women were present at the conference, even if they weren\u2019t seated at the negotiating tables. Greta Thunberg taunted political leaders from outside the event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-59165781\">telling protesters<\/a> the UN climate change summit was a &#8220;two-week long celebration of business as usual and blah, blah, blah&#8221; to &#8220;maintain business as usual&#8221; and &#8220;create loopholes to benefit themselves&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP26?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COP26<\/a> is over. Here\u2019s a brief summary: Blah, blah, blah.<br><br>But the real work continues outside these halls. And we will never give up, ever. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EOne9OogiR\">https:\/\/t.co\/EOne9OogiR<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Greta Thunberg (@GretaThunberg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\/status\/1459612735294029834?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A UN report published last month showed that even though men made up just over half of government delegates at past climate talks, they spoke for 74% of the time, making their voices vastly overrepresented in negotiations. Climate justice advocate and former president of Ireland Mary Robinson dismissed the summit in Glasgow week as &#8220;too male, too pale, too stale.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexandria Villasenor, a 16-year old climate activist from New York who attended the conference, tweeted her dissatisfaction with the lackluster climate outcomes of COP26, saying \u201cWhen you get really, really close to the<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP26?src=hashtag_click\"> #COP26<\/a> negotiations and outcome, you can see that power is held by only a few world leaders, who have been bought and paid for entirely by the fossil fuel industry.\u201d (For his part, President Biden played up the positives of COP26, saying \u201cI can\u2019t think of any two days where more has been accomplished on climate.\u201d)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nanavati, who has been profiled as a young activist in <em>Business Inside<\/em>r and <em>The Guardian,<\/em> was watching Twitter in the days leading up to the summit and saw that youth activists weren&#8217;t even allowed into the summits. \u201cHonestly, I feel like at that point, things like COP become less about making progress and more of just a ceremonial type of thing, trying to show the world that we&#8217;re moving in a direction,\u201d she says. &#8220;But the goals that were made there were in no way adequate to the crisis that we&#8217;re facing at the moment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nanavati and others say that in terms of climate goals, an expedited commitment to net-zero emissions is of critical importance &#8212; but also thinking about the needs of people who may already be disadvantaged. \u201cWe need to really ensure that there&#8217;s a just equitable transition from fossil fuels,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd to make sure that we address environmental racism, we should look to indigenous peoples for solutions when it comes to the climate crisis. Even well-intentioned policies like switching to electrification and renewable energy can wreak havoc on tribal lands, because of the mining for minerals needed for batteries and panels. \u201cYou can\u2019t be sacrificing Indigenous Peoples and clean water in order to get solar panels,\u201d an Indigenous climate activist named Nuskmata told Canadian media company <a href=\"https:\/\/thenarwhal.ca\/\"><em>The Narwhal<\/em><\/a> before leaving for the Glasgow summit. \u201cIt\u2019s not just swapping out oil and gas. It\u2019s about changing the system so that it\u2019s sustainable for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women and girls around the world bear the brunt of climate change: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/11\/1105322\">80 percent<\/a> of the displaced by climate related disasters and changes around the world are women and girls. They can say that it&#8217;s natural,\u201d she says. \u201cBut obviously we know that climate change is a man-made, anthropogenic event. So our education systems are not teaching us that it&#8217;s an important thing. So why would students be worried about something that we know nothing about?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She remains optimistic through her anger at the fossil fuel companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/one-earth\/fulltext\/S2590-3322(21)00233-5\">like Exxon Mobil<\/a> that critics say <a href=\"https:\/\/in.mashable.com\/science\/15520\/the-carbon-footprint-sham\">push a story<\/a> about personal responsibility rather than systems-level change. That\u2019s partly because she has seen the impact in her own life of having challenging conversations about the climate crisis with family members and peers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think every little thing matters &#8212; every letter that you write to a representative, every call you make to them &#8212; they will listen. It is so important for us as young people to be reaching out to these people, because we might not be able to vote but as their constituents, they have to listen to us.
