Angelica Garcia-Dunn, now a successful Houston entrepreneur running a $20 million company, knows what rock bottom looks like. <\/span>She hit it 13 years ago, after deciding to take a break from her corporate job.<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, to a Mexican-American family, Garcia-Dunn grew up selling tamales and speaking Spanish — she learned English in the first grade — and became the first in her family to graduate from college. She eventually got an MBA, and worked at a succession of big banks, including Bank of America and Chase.<\/span><\/p>\n

By 2003, she was married with two small children, and one was frequently getting sick with ear infections. \u201cI felt guilty staying at home, and guilty going to work,\u201d she says. \u201cSo I decided not to go back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when Garcia-Dunn discovered her husband was having an affair — and, in fact, had a child with another woman. Garcia-Dunn was devastated. The revelation was a particular affront to her religious and cultural upbringing. \u201cI come from a family that doesn\u2019t get divorced,\u201d she says. Ending the marriage, for her, was the only option. \u201cIt was just too painful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But the decision left her financially vulnerable. One day, \u201cI went to the grocery store to buy basics, like ramen noodles,\u201d she recalls, with difficulty. \u201cWe had a basket of groceries, [but] my card didn\u2019t go through. My daughter goes, \u2018Mommy, why didn\u2019t we bring our food?\u2019 I go, \u2018We just have to go home and get another card.\u2019 That wasn\u2019t the case.\u201d A generous neighbor helped them eat that night. \u201cMy kids at four and two, you know, we\u2019d been through a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six years later, Garcia-Dunn would be starting her own shipping and transportation company — <\/span>AIM Global Logistics<\/span><\/a>, which now has multiple divisions and 25 employees — but at that moment, the future looked grim. She found a 100-percent commission sales job with Northwestern Mutual, but struggled to make a livable wage. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuicide was not an option,\u201d she says. \u201cI had two young children who depended on me. I basically made a decision — do I become bitter, or do I become better? I chose the latter.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Garcia-Dunn, whose work email signature contains a biblical verse, relied heavily on her Christian faith to get her through the rockiest times. But she also believes, in every situation, that \u201cthere is a way to get out of it, and you are not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Company on the Highway<\/b><\/p>\n

\"angelica_featured\"A lifeline came in the form of a Northwestern Mutual client, a fellow single mom who saw promise in Garcia-Dunn\u2019s selling abilities — and also saw Garcia-Dunn bringing the kids, out of necessity, along on customer visits. \u201cShe knew what I was going through,\u201d Garcia-Dunn says. <\/span><\/p>\n

The client, who ran a freight company, ABA Express, transporting goods by ocean and air to South America, offered Garcia-Dunn a part-time job. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what a container was,\u201d Garcia-Dunn says, but \u201cit was stable income.\u201d She soon learned the basics of transport, \u201ceverything that is entailed in moving just one piece all the way to the final destination.\u201d<\/p>\n

The part-time job quickly became full-time, and Garcia-Dunn stayed for 3 years. The former banker took a liking to the freight industry\u2019s logistics. Whether it was food or clothing or barrels of oil, \u201cyou need transportation,\u201d she says. \u201cIt just fascinates me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But trucking — a service that her employer didn\u2019t offer — really caught her interest. \u201cI have a lot of uncles who are truck drivers,\u201d she says. \u201cAs a little girl, traveling from Houston, from Corpus to Mexico…I loved seeing the trucks.\u201d She left ABA Express in 2006 to open up a Houston office for System Transport, a large flatbed carrier based in Spokane, Wash. She was soon making over $200,000 a year in salary, working her connections in Mexico to bring in more business.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then, some chance advice at a petrochemical conference, which Garcia-Dunn attended to solicit corporate business, led her to take another step. An Exxon representative took Garcia-Dunn aside, and encouraged her to start her own freight business and tap into big corporations\u2019 supplier-diversity programs. \u201cShe said: \u2018You\u2019re a woman, you\u2019re Latina [and] you know what you\u2019re doing,\u2019\u201d Garcia-Dunn says. <\/span><\/p>\n

A Rig of Her Own<\/b><\/p>\n

In 2009, with a $500 credit card and $50,000 in savings, Garcia-Dunn created AIM Global Logistics, specializing in oil and gas transportation. (AIM stands for her name, plus her two children, Isabelle and Mathis.) The company posted $250,000 in revenue its first year. She has since expanded to provide alternative financing and factoring, equipment leasing and warehousing. \u201cWe\u2019re able to be a one-stop shop,\u201d she says, for clients who ship \u201cthe big and ugly\u201d like frac sand and water rigs.<\/p>\n

While AIM Global grew quickly thanks to a booming fracking industry, the downturn in oil prices took its toll. 2015 was a tough year, and Garcia-Dunn was forced to lay off four employees. It was a \u201ctime to reflect and restructure and find ways to diversify,\u201d she says. \u201cWe had to start diversifying not only our clients, but our industries.\u201d The company, which is on track to report $20 million in revenue in its most recent fiscal year, is now targeting the automotive, healthcare and clean-energy sectors, and trying to win government projects. <\/span><\/p>\n

Garcia-Dunn projects revenue of $50 million in the next three to five years, something she could not have predicted when she couldn\u2019t afford groceries. Her personal life has taken an interesting turn as well: She recently remarried, built her dream house, and, at 42, is pregnant with her third child.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what it\u2019s like to have nothing, and I know what it\u2019s like to have it all,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, scaling a company — and being at the top — can be lonely, Garcia-Dunn says. She practices some of the same habits that she learned when her life hit rock bottom. The most important? \u201cSurround yourself with a great support system, your family and your friends, great employees,\u201d she says. She\u2019s also part of C12, a business organization for Christian CEOs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to know where to go to get strength,\u201d she says. \u201cWe weren\u2019t meant to be alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Angelica Garcia-Dunn (AG): When you\u2019re sitting at the table and you\u2019re eating at a restaurant and, \u201cHow did that fork get here? How did this desk get here? How did this chair get here? How did this shirt get here?\u201d There\u2019s all kinds of things that we all need that where we need a truck, where we need ocean, where we need air, where we need rail and it just fascinates me.<\/p>\n

SOT AG: When are those motors gonna come in?<\/p>\n

AG: At AIM Global Logistics, we actually move from a pound to over a million pounds and everything in between whether it\u2019s via truck, ocean, air, rail, and we also offer warehousing. And our specialty is everything over dimensional, heavy haul, so the big and ugly. We love doing that.<\/p>\n

AG: As a little girl going down, traveling from Houston, to Mexico, I loved seeing the trucks and I loved like having the truck drivers pull their horn, and my uncle, my family comes from trucking as well.<\/p>\n

CARD: Angelica\u2019s family is originally from Mexico.<\/p>\n

AG: I actually have dual citizenship so I am Mexican and then I\u2019m also American. But growing up my first language was Spanish. I didn\u2019t learn English until uh probably first grade.<\/p>\n

AG: I started working as a very young child to help support the family. Selling lemonade and snow cones in front of the-, in the front yard, you know, helping sell the tamales, and the tacos, and whatever it took to bring in extra money.<\/p>\n

CARD: In 1997 Angelica completed her MBA at the University of Dallas and went into banking.<\/p>\n

CARD: She also got married.
\nCARD: After her second child was born, she stopped working.<\/p>\n

CARD: But in 2002 her marriage collapsed.<\/p>\n

AG: When my husband left it was a really\u2014sorry if I get emotional\u2014but\u2026 um, so I mean I, I remember my kids were young and they said um we went to the grocery store and we had we had a basket of groceries and I didn\u2019t walk out with them. My card didn\u2019t go through. My, my daughter goes, \u201cMommy, why didn\u2019t we bring our food?\u201d Oh, I go, \u201cThe card didn\u2019t work. We just have to go home and get another card.\u201d That wasn\u2019t the case. So my kids at four and two, you know we\u2019ve been through a lot.<\/p>\n

CARD: Angelica found a job in the freight industry.<\/p>\n

CARD: By 2009 she felt ready to start AIM Global Logistics - a certified minority, woman-owned company.<\/p>\n

AG: It\u2019s a matter of proving yourself. And I got certified in 2009 and it\u2019s now 2016 and I barely just got my first contract last year with a big, with a big first-tier oil and gas company was last year. So, it takes a while.<\/p>\n

CARD: Over the years, AIM has worked mostly with the oil industry, transporting storage tanks and equipment.<\/p>\n

AG: Imagine a, uh moving a rig from Oklahoma, 70 trucks to the Port of Houston, and to move a rig you have to have the cranes, the pull trucks, the tandem trucks, and then you have to order the permits and escorts. It comes to Houston, you have to hire a crating company to do all the crating. Then you have to hire the ship. Then it takes three days to get to Mexico, then in Mexico you have to have all your trucks lined up to unload the ship and the cranes. And then you take it to site in Mexico to drill, then you have to rig up. So it\u2019s A to B and everything in the middle.<\/p>\n

CARD: With such massive projects, cash flow is a constant challenge.<\/p>\n

SOT AG: What was the rate that they gave us from Abilene? And then the base drop one?<\/p>\n

AG: Whether you\u2019re selling a tamale for 50 cents or whether you are selling a rig for 5 million it\u2019s all cash flow. You still have payroll, you still have rent. About two years ago we had a customer in Mexico that didn\u2019t pay and we really, really went through some hard times.<\/p>\n

AG: If I can\u2019t pay in 30 days, you know, call \u2018em weekly, call \u2018em monthly. There was one carrier that it took me six months to pay. And I gave \u2018em their last check. I went in person and gave them their last check and they sent me flowers. So yeah, I\u2019m not always a 30-day payer, um, but I do pay, uh, even if it takes six months.<\/p>\n

CARD: In 2015 AIM had $15 million in revenues.<\/p>\n

CARD: But the downturn in the oil industry made it her toughest year yet.<\/p>\n

AG: Even before, you know, the drop in prices I started going into let\u2019s look at government projects. So we started looking at solar power. We started looking at wind, so not just oil and gas. So we had to start diversifying our, not only our clients, but our industries.<\/p>\n

CARD: Angelica has expanded the AIM Group of companies into equipment leasing, chemical sourcing and financing.<\/p>\n

AG: Every day\u2019s a different monster. One day I\u2019m moving schoolbooks and another I\u2019m moving, you know, some 400,000 pound piece, or a generator, or a turbine.
