WikiPortraits is always looking to bring photographers into our network and help wiki-photographers become credentialed to photograph events.
Event coverage
[edit]Since launching in 2024, WikiPortraits photographers have covered numerous events as credentialed press, including events in the film, politics, journalism, literature, tech industry, and science sectors. These photos now receive upwards of 80 million views per month across over 140 language versions of Wikipedia, as well as find use in third-party publications such as news and magazines. About 40% of our subjects have been women, and one-third are people of color.
WikiPortraits' current network has covered or is scheduled to cover the following high-profile events each year:
- Nobel Prize Lectures and Ceremonies (Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway)
- Cannes Film Festival (Cannes, France)
- Pulitzer Prize Ceremony (New York City, New York, USA)
- U.S. National Book Awards (New York City, New York USA)
- Sundance Film Festival (Park City, Utah, USA)
- Jaipur Literary Festival (Jaipur, India)
- American Academy for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) Annual Conference (USA)
- South by Southwest (SXSW) (Austin, Texas, USA)
- International Journalism Festival (Perugia, Italy)
- Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Edinburgh, Scotland)
- Edinburgh Book Festival (Edinburgh, Scotland)
- Venice Film Festival (Venice, Italy)
- Toronto International Film Festival (Toronto, Canada)
- New York Film Festival (New York City, New York, USA)
- Consumer Electronics Show (CES) (Las Vegas, Nevada, USA)
Events on the WikiPortraits wishlist (but not yet!):
- Academy Awards/Oscars
- Golden Globes
- Met Gala
- Davos
In addition to covering the above events, we are always looking to support Commons photographers trying to get credentialed at any other events they're interested in covering, whether small or large, local or international.
Portrait studios
[edit]
WikiPortraits also supports putting up public portrait studios. So far, we've had portrait studios coinciding with the Sundance Film Festival and South by Southwest. These studios serve as both outreach, to educate the public about the Wikimedia Commons and free licensing, as well as a way to capture notable individuals who come through. We're looking to expand and help set up portrait studios at additional events.
Joining
[edit]We're always looking for local photographers to help with any of the events listed above, as well as helping Commons photographers get credentialed to events they're interested in and attending (especially local!).
WikiPortraits photographers should have a demonstrated portfolio of high-quality photographs, ideally including portraits and/or event coverage. WikiPortraits photographers should ideally also have equipment capable of delivering professional-level results, such as a DSLR or mirrorless camera (though for our top-line events with multiple photographers, we may have equipment available to lend).
If you're interested in joining our network and/or need help becoming accredited at an event, please reach out to us via hello
wikiportraits.org (contact forms available on our website).
