She Makes Fuss-Free Babywear Essentials
Megan Skeath’s babywear brand, Mama Coco, was born from her own experiences as a mother. During her first months of motherhood, she found that complicated swaddles made late-night feeding even more challenging. Needing an alternative and finding none, she began designing her own button-Velcro- and zipper-free pieces. The Los Angeles founder’s designs really did make a difference in her life – no more blanket origami when swaddling, or noisy Velcro that could wake the baby. In 2019, Skeath brought her products to the market, knowing other moms would respond – and has garnered a loyal customer base in the process.
Here’s our lightly edited Q&A, from The Story Exchange 1,000+ Stories Project.
How is your business different from others in your industry?
I started this business from my experience as a mother, and my overwhelming need for better solutions. Dressing and swaddling my baby was tough, especially during middle of the night feedings. I designed each garment from experience, and with purpose. I am the solo creator, designer and owner of Mama Coco. I wear all the hats to keep this brand growing, and am bootstrapping my way forward to meet the unwavering demand from a loyal and growing community of new and expecting moms.
Tell us about your biggest success so far.
Receiving glowing, appreciative reviews on a daily basis from our loyal customer base makes my day, everyday! Second to that, receiving the formal patent for the Mama Coco Cocoon Swaddle was a very exciting day, as the swaddle was the first essential I designed – and is now a best seller.
What is your top challenge and how have you addressed it?
Maintaining stock to meet demand, as well as managing cash flow, have been a challenge over the years. I took the slow and steady approach as the company ramped up – which was painful at times, particularly when customers couldn’t order the styles they loved most. But in the end it was worth it, because Mama Coco is still here and growing!
Have you experienced any significant personal situations that have affected your business decisions?
Being a mother and an entrepreneur bootstrapping a startup certainly has had its impact on decisions pertaining to both my family and my business. I trust my gut, and only take on what I can in order to prevent burnout.
What is your biggest tip for other startup entrepreneurs?
Trust and believe in yourself. Learn from and embrace your mistakes to turn them into wins.
How do you find inspiration on your darkest days?
My babies, and the glowing reviews from satisfied customers!
What is your go-to song to get motivated on tough days?
Anything by the Spice Girls.
Who is your most important role model?
My mom. She is a devoted and loving mother of five. ◾
