Commons:WikiPortraits/Reports/2025
Background
[edit]
WikiPortraits is a project working on capturing high-quality photographs of people for Wikimedia Commons through outreach and event coverage. It formally launched in the United States in 2024 and has since grown into a global initiative supported by a network of volunteer photographers around the world.
Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, rely on freely licensed images. This creates a persistent challenge for photographing notable people, since only a small number of photographers and outlets both have event access and publish their images under free licenses. As a result, a large number of Wikipedia biographies still have low-quality images or no photo at all. This gap has been recognized for years and even covered by major media, including the New York Times article "Wikipedia May Be a Font of Facts, but It's a Desert for Photos" (2009).
One of the most effective ways to gather freely licensed photos of notable individuals at scale is to go where they already are: festivals, awards ceremonies, conferences, and other events. However, attending these events as a photographer typically requires press credentials and, depending on the event, travel and lodging. While professional photo agencies and media organizations have established pathways to obtain access, individual independent photographers — including Wikimedia volunteers — often face barriers.
Over the years, a number of Wikimedians and Wikimedia affiliates have attended events as press. Independent photographers such as David Shankbone and Gage Skidmore have have a long history of event coverage and freely licensing their photos. A number of Wikimedia affiliates have led initiatives, including Wikimedia Deutschland's annual coverage of the Berlin Film Festival and Festivalsommer; the Wikimedia Ghana User Group's 500 Notable Ghanaians Campaign; Wikimedia Sverige's coverage of events including Eurovision; and Wikimedia España's coverage of the Goya Awards and other festivals.
A broader overview of these efforts is documented at Wiki Covers Events on Meta-Wiki.
WikiPortraits was created in early 2024 to build on this foundation by providing a more coordinated, international effort to support Wikimedia photographers in covering events and photographing notable people, particularly in regions who do not have an existing affiliate to support their efforts. WikiPortraits also serves as a recruitment engine to bring new photographers into the Wikimedia Commons community.
Introduction
[edit]This report covers WikiPortraits activities throughout 2025. The next few sections cover top-level information and projects, followed by a summary of just a portion of our event coverage.
Top-level stats
[edit]Throughout 2025, WikiPortraits photographers have covered over 180 events. These range from significant international events (Eurovision, Nobel Prizes, Cannes Film Festival), to indigenous festivals (Riddu Riđđu, Márkomeannu, Santa Fe Indian Market), to journalism events (Knight Media Forum, National Association of Hispanic Journalists Convention), to sporting events (World Figure Skating Championships, Ryder Cup, EuroBasket Women), and much much more. Our coverage by event type can be explored at Category:WikiPortraits by event type.
WikiPortraits has over 42,000 images from 2025 events (with some repitition through crops). In 2025, these images have already received over 1,000,000,000 views through their use across Wikimedia projects (with our most viewed subject being Lionel Messi). If we also count the <7,000 photos from our 2024 event coverage, our media has been viewed over 2,000,000,000 times across Wikimedia projects. Through external use of our freely licensed media, the total viewership can be expected to be much higher.
Geography
[edit]Through the end of 2025, WikiPortraits's network of photographers spans countries across all continents except Antarctica. In South America, we have photographers from Argentina, Peru, and Brazil; in North America, the United States, Canada, and Mexico; in Europe, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and United Kingdom; in Africa, Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Tunisia; in Asia, Armenia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Philippines, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Tunisia; and in Oceania, Australia and New Zealand. Our reach demonstrates our dedication to being a global effort, and to help Wikimedians in countries and regions where they may not have an existing affiliate that can help them obtain press credentials.
In the United States, WikiPortraits has photographers from just under half (24) of the states. We have a soft goal of growing our network to include at least one photographer in every state, enabling us to cover events on a truly nationwide and economical scale, no matter how local.
Newcomers
[edit]Through 2025, WikiPortraits onboarded over 130 individuals to the Wikimedia Commons. Combined with the 19 individuals we onboarded in 2024, we have collectively onboarded 150 new contributors to Wikimedia. We've tracked these editors through our 2025 dashboard.
Through the end of 2025, these newcomers have collectively contributed the following:
- 55,000+ edits across all projects
- 21,900+ Commons uploads
- 385 articles created on the English Wikipedia
- 6,200+ edits across Wikipedia projects
- 580,000+ words added across Wikipedia projects
- 5,800+ references added to articles
- 123 Wikidata items created
Our pipeline shows that we not only onboard photographers for Commons, but that a portion of our newcomers continue on to contribute to other projects, including Wikipedia and Wikidata. Our photographers not only edit these projects to add WikiPortraits photos, but also help improve and even create articles.
With the community's concern for declining active editors, we believe that leaning into Commons and recruiting external photographers to contribute can be an effective way to bring new contributors to the movement.
Collaborations
[edit]WikiPortraits had the fortune of being able to collaborate with a number of Wikimedia affiliates to cover events around the world.
- Wikimedia CH: Wikimedia CH (Swizterland) has been a great partner in funding and supporting WikiPortraits event coverage in Switzerland, including Eurovision Song Contest and Art Basel 2025. In addition, Wikimedia CH provided a grant for the development of commons.gallery, a new platform for Commons photographers to create nice, sharable portfolios of their work.
- AfroCROWD User Group: AfroCROWD provided support and funding for WikiPortraits to cover several events covering African American culture, including the Essence Festival of Culture and Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival.
- Wikimédiens du Bénin User Group: The Bénin User Group photographed the 2025 Bénin Independence Day, Festival of Masks, Festival International des Films de Femmes de Cotonou, and WeLove Eya Festival events as part of the WikiPortraits initiative.
- Wikimedia España: WikiPortraits coverage in Spain has been generously supported by Wikimedia España, including coverage of the Goyas, Valladolid International Film Festival, and Eurovision Preparty in Madrid.
- Wikimedia Norge: Provided funding for WikiPortraits to cover indigenous and cultural events in Norway: Riddu Riđđu, Márkomeannu, Tons of Rock, and Moldejazz
- Wikimedia Canada: Provided funding for WikiPortraits to cover the Toronto International Film Festival, allowing us to onboard more photographers from Canada.
- Wikimedia UK: Provided funding for WikiPortraits to cover the first South by Southwest London. This event brought together many UK WikiPortraits photographers who have been focusing on covering music events.
- Wikimedia Italia: Provided funding for WikiPortraits coverage at Venice Film Festival.
- Wikimedia NYC: Wikimedia NYC co-hosted Wikicurious Pi Day at SXSW 2025, where WikiPortraits also had a presence and photo studio.
- Wikimedia Deutschland: Provided funding for Berlinale and Frankfurt Book Fair, at the latter they funded a booth where we could also present WikiPortraits and some of our works.
Software
[edit]Through 2025, WikiPortraits has leaned into developing new software tools to help both WikiPortraits photographers and the broader Commons community. Much of our work has been to help solve challenges we've discovered through onboarding dozens of photographers to Commons.
Tools we've developed in 2025 include:
.png/250px-Commons_Gallery_screenshot_-_Album_Example_(2025-06-18).png)
- commons.gallery, a new web platform that allows Wikimedia Commons users to set up beautiful, sleek portfolios that more closely resemble dedicated portfolio sites like Flickr. While Wikimedia Commons users can set up galleries on-wiki, the experience lives within the text-first MediaWiki interface and the galleries aren't easily discoverable. Our mission with commons.gallery is to provide a dedicated, modern, media-first interface to showcase and share work. So far we've had over 90 users create over 400 albums of photos. This is not just WikiPortraits photographers, but other Wikimedia Commons photographers, Wikimedia affiliates, and Wikimedians in residence setting up albums for their institutions. This project was funded by Wikimedia CH.
- A WikiPortraits onboarding portal that guides users through the registration process, including having them select an unproblematic username; setting up their userpage; and setting their desired attribution name.
- A WikiPortraits template generator to help our photographers create WikiPortraits templates and categories to mark their photos with.
A software developer in our community has also started building a custom upload portal that would not only allow users to batch-upload photos with consistent naming and descriptions per event, but will also take care of automatically creating Wikidata items when needed, to better utilize Structured Data on Commons. We expect that upload tool to be available to our photographers later this year.
Third-party usage
[edit]Free licensing enables anyone to use WikiPortraits photos, and as a result, WikiPortraits photos have reach far beyond the Wikimedia projects. WikiPortraits photos have been used by dozens of publications all around the world.
A number of publications through 2025 utilized WikiPortraits media. A small sample follows:
- Hindustan Times (Anadi Athaley: "I see editing as an act of care")
- AXS TV (Robbie Williams Unveils Collab with Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes)
- Far Out Magazine (Stephen King names "the most frightening" episode of TV ever: "Never been beaten")
- The Prague Reporter ('Ride or Die': Bill Nighy, Ed Skrein join cast of Spencer-Waddingham spy series filming in Prague)
- The Bay State Banner (The 97th Academy Awards: history in the making)
- OC Media (Nobel Prize winner Daron Acemoglu joins Samvel Karapetyan against Pashinyan)
- ScheerPost (Julian Assange: Sweden Broke Own Laws With Nobel Prize to Venezuela’s Machado)
We've also seen WikiPortraits photos get relatively frequent use in student newspapers:
- Daily Trojan (Make Glen Powell metrosexual again)
- The Boar ('It Was Just an Accident': Cannes win and Jafar Panahi’s cinema of resistance)
- Varsity (The politics of Highest 2 Lowest)
- Cavalier Daily ("Monkey Man" is a bloodthirsty thriller that misses its own mark)
- DU Clarion (Biopic burnout: 'A Better Man' bombs at box office)
- The Johns Hopkins News-Letter (The Brutalist: When technique triumphs purpose)
- Strand Magazine (Mission Impossible: The 2025 Cannes Film Festival Dress Code)
Media coverage
[edit]In early 2025, 404 Media, an independent reporter-owned news publication that focuses on tech and the internet, interviewed WikiPortraits organizers and photographers. On March 10, they published an article, "Photographers Are on a Mission to Fix Wikipedia's Famously Bad Celebrity Portraits". This article made the rounds between 404's readers and social media, and we had an influx of interested photographers writing in to join.

Following 404's coverage, the BBC reached out to us, and on March 28, they published an article, "Amateur photographers hope to fix Wikipedia's 'terrible' pictures", as well as being discussed on the radio (link, starting at 14:55). This caused an even greater flurry of interested photographers, with over 100 volunteers from all over the world reaching out. We worked arduously to onboard them by getting them to set up Wikimedia accounts, helping them upload their first photos onto Commons, and working with them to get credentialed for local events.
Around this time, we received additional coverage from PetaPixel, Radio France, Phoblographer, Fast Company, Engadget, and PC Mag, among others.
In June 2025, Die Zeit published an article, "Der Text ist top, das Bild ein Blob" (The text is great, the image is a blob). Harald Krichel, a WikiPortraits photographer from Germany, was interviewed.
Communication
[edit]
In late 2025, WikiPortraits was able to place more resources towards increasing our social media and communications. We increased our Instagram following and have gained several hundred followers through 2025. We also launched the WikiPortraits Blog, to give our community and fans updates on our coverage, as well as provide helpful information and tips regarding press photography.
The WikiPortraits community also presented at several conferences, including:
- Wikimania in August (poster): 10,000 WikiPortraits Later: Lessons from around the Globe
- WikiConference North America in October: 30,000 WikiPortraits Later: Lessons from around the Globe
We also showcased commons.gallery, the portfolio platform built by WikiPortraits with funding from Wikimedia CH:
- WikiConference North America in October: Introducing Commons Gallery
- GLAM Wiki in October: Commons Gallery: A Modern Way to Showcase Photos

Film events
[edit]Sundance Film Festival
[edit]Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent film festival in the United States, starting in January and "kicking off" the annual major film festival circuit. Sundance is special to us as it is the first event we got wiki-photographers credentialed to in 2024, before WikiPortraits was even called WikiPortraits!
At Sundance, our photographers were able to cover dozens of photocalls for film premieres, predominately featuring independent filmmakers from around the world.
WikiPortraits Studio
[edit]WikiPortraits hosted a public portrait studio, inviting festival attendees to get a free portrait taken and learn more about Wikimedia and free licensing. Several attendees had Wikipedia articles that have been illustrated.

[edit]Telluride Film Festival is a significant but more relaxed film festival in the San Juan Mountains. There are no red carpets and limited press presence. However, it is still a great opportunity to photograph talent, particularly through public panels and Q&As.
Toronto International Film Festival
[edit]The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of the largest public film festivals in the world. This is a key event in WikiPortraits' calendar due to the scale and international slate of films, and provides an opportunity for us to onboard and include new WikiPortraits photographers (particularly those based in Toronto). Given TIFF has over 100 red carpets and photocalls each year, it provides a unique opportunity to efficiently photograph film creatives from all around the world.
For TIFF 2025, we had a total of 13 photographers. Five of our photographers were first-time WikiPortraits contributors and five of which are local to Toronto (3 were both local and new to WikiPortraits!). Another two photographers have done an event or two for WikiPortraits earlier in the year, but were still overall new to contributing.
Together, our photographers covered the photocalls for over 100 films (only missing a tiny handful!). Other than the official festival in-house photography partner, we are likely the outlet who covered the most films. We also had photographers schedule private photo sessions with some talent, providing another avenue for even higher quality portraiture of notable individuals. Our work at TIFF displays our dedication to covering the full slate of talent, from local to international, from famous celebrities to new creatives.
